A 12-Year Match

A Bond That Time Couldn't Break

For more than 12 years, Mary and Arayah shared one of the most enduring and impactful mentoring relationships in the history of our Amachi program. Their journey began when Arayah was just six years old, a quiet and curious first grader navigating the early years of school and life. Mary stepped in as her mentor during that formative time, not just to offer support, but to build a relationship grounded in trust, consistency, and care.

As the years passed, their bond significantly deepened. Mary was there to celebrate Arayah’s birthdays, encourage her through challenges, and walk alongside her during some of life’s biggest transitions. From childhood into adolescence and eventually young adulthood, Mary remained a steady presence. Whether it was helping with homework, sharing meals, or simply showing up when it mattered most, Mary modeled what faithful, long-term mentorship looks like.

In May, we had the privilege of honoring Arayah as one of our graduating seniors at our Amachi celebration dinner. It was a powerful moment, made even more meaningful by the presence of her family. During the celebration, Arayah’s mother shared through tears, “Ms. Mary is more than a mentor; she’s family.” It was a testament not only to Mary’s investment but to the kind of lasting impact a dedicated mentor can have—not just on a child, but on an entire family.

As Arayah steps into the next chapter of her life with plans to attend cosmetology school, we are filled with gratitude. Her story is a beautiful reminder that mentorship, at its best, is about more than weekly check-ins or program milestones. It’s about showing up, year after year, and walking through life together. Mary and Arayah’s match may be officially “closed,” now that Arayah has graduated, but their bond and relationship they spent over a decade building will continue for years to come.
